How to attach a VHD in Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012

There may be times when you will find it necessary to attach a Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) to your existing operating system. Window 7 and later operating systems support this feature. In this blog we will explore the steps to attach and detach the VHD.

Follow these steps to attach the VHD in Windows 7 or Windows 8.

1. Launch the Computer Management console.

2. Click on Disk Management to view the current disk attached.

3. Right click on Disk Management and then click on Attach VHD.

4. On the Attach Virtual Hard Disk dialog box type in the path to the VHD or click Browse. Browse to the path of the VHD. Click OK.

5. The Virtual Hard disk is now mounted and assigned Drive letters.

6. Your drive is now ready for use.

Follow the following steps to detach the VHD in Windows 7 or Windows 8.

1. Launch the Computer Management console.

2. I want to detach Disk 1, right click on Disk 1 and click on Detach VHD.

3. CAUTION, if you do not desire to delete the disk ensure the Delete the virtual hard disk file after removing the disk check box is cleared and press OK.

4. The VHD is now detached.

Follow these steps to attach the VHD in Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012.

1. Launch the Server Manager console.

2. Use the same steps as above to attach and detach a VHD in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012.
